Employment in Canada’s trucking and logistics sector fell sharply in December, shedding 16,700 jobs compared with November, according to new data from Trucking HR Canada.
The decline included 6,300 fewer transport truck drivers employed month over month. Overall employment in the Canadian economy was largely flat in December, rising by just 8,200 jobs after three consecutive months of growth.

“The slight dip in employment numbers is not unexpected given global instability and its impact on trade,’” says Craig Faucette, chief operating officer of Trucking HR Canada. “The sector did shed some jobs, but less than previous months.”
Trucking HR Canada said employment in the sector was down 2.1 per cent from November and 1.2 per cent compared with December 2024, representing 9,800 fewer jobs year over year. The number of employed transport truck drivers fell 1.9 per cent month to month and was down 4.3 per cent from a year earlier.
The data also show the number of people actively seeking work in trucking and logistics rose by 900 in December from November, though it remained lower than a year earlier. Job seekers in the transport truck driver occupation increased 7.2 per cent month to month and were 17.1 per cent higher than in December 2024.
