Trucking job openings decline for third straight quarter as hiring cools

Job openings in Canada’s truck transportation sector continued to decline through the third quarter of 2025, according to new data released this week by Trucking HR Canada (THRC).

The latest figures show both the number of vacant positions and the share of total jobs being actively recruited for fell in Q3, extending a downward trend seen throughout the first three quarters of the year. The data follows last week’s release of employment and unemployment figures for trucking and logistics.

“THRC tracks the labour market specifically to monitor trends like this: the Q3 data shows the pace of hiring in truck transportation is clearly slowing,” said Craig Faucette, chief operating officer at Trucking HR Canada. “This cooling trend gives employers a moment to reassess workforce planning after several years of intense hiring pressure.”

Job openings in the truck transportation sector declined 18 per cent year over year in Q3 2025, representing 1,785 fewer vacant positions. The proportion of truck transportation jobs being actively recruited for fell to 3.7 per cent, down from 4.3 per cent in the same quarter last year.

Openings for transport truck drivers declined 12 per cent, or 1,595 positions, year over year. The share of driver jobs being actively recruited for also slipped, from 3.7 per cent in Q3 2024 to 3.3 per cent in Q3 2025.

Despite the slowdown, vacancy rates in truck transportation remain above the national average. Statistics Canada data show job openings across the broader workforce held steady at 2.8 per cent from the second to the third quarter of 2025.
