Polar Air Cargo, a global air carrier which specializes in time-definite, cost-effective airport-to-airport scheduled air freight service, has announced that it is now using the distribution services of Unisys e-@ction Logistics Solutions to provide its customers with secure access to customized transportation services via the Internet.
The e-@ction solution provided to Polar, known as eCargo, went into production in late March after a brief pilot study involving several of Polar’s major customers.
This new function lets Polar Air Cargo customers check schedule availability, make bookings, manage their allotments and monitor the status of their shipments online, providing access to reporting and data analysis and information on the status of their cargo down to the individual shipment level.
“Polar Air Cargo uses the Unisys core airline management system hosted in our Minneapolis data center, and we are very pleased that they are now providing the enhanced services to deliver new functions to their customers while simultaneously reducing their operating costs,” says Christopher Shawdon, vice president of Logistics Solutions at Unisys.
Unisys worked closely with Polar Air Cargo to integrate and tailor the Internet services to meet its business requirements. By hosting Polar’s Web service, Unisys will continue working with Polar Air Cargo as their business volumes and functional requirements grow.
“The Unisys Internet distribution services support our plans to expand our business into the electronic marketplace to help freight forwarders and shippers move cargo in a cost-effective manner. We turned to Unisys because of its proven track record with airlines and freight forwarders, and its e-business-enabled capabilities to support future service enhancements,” said Ira Gershkoff, vice president and CIO at Polar.
Unisys distribution services are accessible via the Web, Internet- enabled mobile phone, mobile computing and messaging devices. They are designed to work through standard technology interfaces to suit the individual needs of shippers, forwarders, general sales agents, ground handlers and airline staff remote from their central systems.
