Fredericton, N.B.-UPS (Canada) has announced that Shelley Gares, a 16-year UPS veteran, has been promoted to Vice-President of Customs Brokerage. In this role she assumes responsibility for the company’s customs brokerage operation headquartered in Fredericton.
“I’m proud to be appointed to this position and to have the opportunity to lead such an exceptional team,” says Gares. “The brokerage operation in Fredericton performs a critical service for our customers across the country."
Gares was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and grew up in Cold Lake, Alberta. She began her career with UPS in Winnipeg as a part-time operations employee in October 1988.
By April, 1992, Shelley was promoted to International Office Supervisor. Since then she has held various management positions, including managing UPS International ports, setting up UPS Canada’s air gateway in Winnipeg and managing UPS Canada’s gateway in Hamilton.
“With Shelley’s extensive knowledge and experience, she will be able to lead her team to new heights and through the ever evolving world of custom brokerage,” says Glenn Rice, president of UPS Canada. "I know as a team they will continue to provide valuable services and advice to our customers."
Gares has received a logistics and brokerage designation as well as a Graduate Degree in Customs Brokerage. Shelley has also been active in the communities where she’s lived and worked by volunteering with United Way, Winnipeg Harvest, West Island Palliative Care and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Gares replaces Lisa Par who has accepted the position of Vice President of Operations for UPS Supply Chain Solutions, a subsidiary of UPS. She will be stationed in Toronto. Par has managed the Customs Brokerage Centre since it first opened in Fredericton nearly 10 years ago.
"While I am very excited about this new opportunity, I will miss the team I’ve worked so closely with and the community I’ve been involved in", said Par.
The Custom Brokerage Centre in Fredericton is responsible for customs brokerage clearance, including shipments carried by UPS or another carrier, for all modes of transport air, ground, rail or ocean. The Centre is one of Fredericton’s largest private sector employers with nearly 600 employees.
