Xantic launches hydrographic data delivery service

A new data delivery service which incorporates a special purpose compression and encoding technique will soon be launched by mobile satellite communication provider Xantic.

This service, which is being developed in partnership with chart distributor, Marine Press of Canada, allows email delivery of large amounts of hydrographic data in extremely compact files.

That means mariners will be able to use a chart folio update service at a reasonable cost, the company claims.

Suitable for the low bandwidth connections commonly in use by a majority of merchant vessels, the advanced technology provides a cost effective delivery service, the company adds.

Xantic will provide the content to vessels as a secure point-to-point delivery for registered users of their AmosConnect service.

The two companies will build on their unique technologies to offer the market a subscription service for notifications to mariners and chart tracings to vessels at sea.

The digital delivery service includes official notices to mariners and tracings from a large number of hydrographic offices including those of the British Admiralty, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Germany.

The Digitrace application developed by Marine Press of Canada will provide vessels and owners with easy access to chart inventory, correction data and revision history.
