Maersk’s recently released Logistics Trend Map shows visibility, Internet of Things and diversification as the Top 3 trends moving forward for the supply chain sector.
Maersk launched a new Logistics Trend Map aimed at helping businesses navigate the increasing uncertainty and complexity in global supply chains, caused by a mix of geopolitical tensions, inflation, technological disruption and evolving consumer demands.
Developed in partnership with Statista, the report draws on AI-driven analysis of scientific studies, patents, earnings calls and startup activity, alongside insights from more than 500 logistics leaders and industry experts. The result is a map of the top 30 global supply chain trends, with in-depth analysis of the 10 most relevant themes for the future of logistics.
Among the top trends identified are supply chain visibility, the Internet of Things, supply chain diversification, financial resilience, circular economy, AI, cybersecurity and innovations in e-commerce and last-mile delivery.
These topics show significant variation in impact and relevance depending on geography and industry sector. The report spans eight industry verticals: retail, automotive, chemicals, pharma and healthcare, lifestyle and fashion, perishables, technology and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG).
One of the more surprising findings emerged in the retail sector, where 53 per cent of surveyed logistics decision-makers identified reverse logistics and return handling as their most pressing challenge—higher than geopolitical disruptions, which only 38 per cent flagged as a primary concern. In contrast, 59 per cent of leaders in the fashion, lifestyle and pharma sectors listed geopolitical disruptions as a top issue.
“In an increasingly complex and challenging world, staying ahead in logistics has never been more critical,” said Karsten Kildahl, CCO at Maersk. “The question is no longer whether companies will face disruption in their supply chains, but how they can constantly and effectively navigate them. Identifying and analyzing trends therefore enables businesses to stay competitive in a dynamic industry.”
The Logistics Trend Map also includes practical recommendations on how businesses can act on these trends to address key issues and unlock growth opportunities.
