Modern warehouse systems key to supply chain agility: Info-Tech

Increasing operational complexity and rising customer expectations are forcing manufacturers to rethink warehouse operations, with new research suggesting modern warehouse management systems are becoming critical to broader supply chain performance.

A new blueprint from Info-Tech Research Group says many organizations continue to operate with disconnected systems, inconsistent processes and limited data visibility, leaving them ill-equipped to respond to disruptions and shifting demand.

The report, Future-Proof Your Warehouse Operations With Modern Warehouse Management Systems, positions warehouse management systems as more than operational tools, describing them instead as a real-time execution layer within increasingly digital supply chains.

According to Info-Tech, inefficiencies are often rooted in fragmented system architectures and outdated data capture methods, which can lead to delays and poor coordination across production, warehousing and distribution. Many organizations still rely on legacy platforms that lack integration with enterprise systems such as ERP, manufacturing execution systems and transportation management solutions.

“Warehouses can’t operate as isolated functions within the enterprise anymore,” said Shreyas Shukla, principal research director at Info-Tech Research Group. “When they remain disconnected, organizations lose the coordination and real-time awareness needed to respond to disruptions effectively. CIOs need to treat warehouse platforms as part of a connected supply chain ecosystem, where integration and standardization drive faster, more informed decisions.”

The firm outlines a five-phase framework aimed at helping organizations assess current capabilities and build a modernization roadmap. The approach includes documenting existing systems and workflows, evaluating performance gaps, prioritizing improvements using a “4R” capability model (replace, reconfigure, retool or retain) and designing a phased implementation plan.

Info-Tech says the goal is to move companies away from fragmented, reactive operations toward integrated, data-driven warehouse environments that enable coordinated execution across production, inventory and distribution.

The blueprint also includes assessment tools and frameworks designed to help IT and operations leaders align warehouse technology with broader business strategy, improve decision-making and build more resilient supply chains.
