Cando Rail and Terminals expands with acquisition in Northwest Territories

Cando Rail and Terminals, one of North America’s largest operators of first- and last-mile rail infrastructure, has acquired the rail terminal operations of AWP Industries. The terminal, located in the Northwest Territories, provides private railcar storage and transloading services.

The new facility supports key customers in Cando’s network and Class I railway partner CN. Strategically situated at the northern end of CN’s rail network, it serves as a vital gateway for transporting bulk goods to communities, airports, mines, and government agencies in the North. Built recently, the terminal offers significant capacity for growth, presenting a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative to long-haul trucking.

“AWP’s terminal was another perfect fit for Cando,” said Brian Cornick, president and CEO of Cando. “Brad Mapes, the founder and CEO of AWP, has done a tremendous job over the last few years turning undeveloped land into a fast-growing rail terminal serving several of North America’s largest shippers. We are excited to partner with Brad to continue growing the site and providing critical supplies to the North while supporting several of Cando’s largest customers, as well as CN.”

The acquisition marks Cando’s second terminal purchase in under a year.

“Strategic acquisitions have become a cornerstone of Cando’s multi-faceted growth platform,” Cornick said. “Cando plans to continue investing organically and inorganically in critical rail infrastructure to support shipper-customers and Class I partners.”

Following the acquisition, Mapes has joined Cando as an employee and shareholder. He will focus on attracting new customers and increasing volumes at the terminal.

“I am excited to partner with Cando and leverage its scale, access to capital, world-class operations, and deep customer relationships to accelerate and expand my vision for the terminal,” said Mapes.

Cando’s network now has the capacity to store and stage more than 11,000 railcars. The company operates 13 rail terminals, one short-line railway, and provides rail operations at nearly 50 customer locations.
