Port of Vancouver posts record cargo volumes in 2025

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority says the Port of Vancouver handled record cargo volumes in 2025, driven by strong exports of grain, crude oil and potash.

The port moved 170.4 million metric tonnes of cargo last year, up nearly eight per cent from the previous record set in 2024.

“I want to recognize the entire port community for stepping up to support Canadians and their businesses during what are very challenging times for our country—we are stronger together,” said Peter Xotta, president and CEO of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

The authority said international trade rose 11 per cent to a record 147 million tonnes, with more than three-quarters of volumes tied to Indo-Pacific markets. China, Japan and South Korea were the port’s top trading partners.

Bulk exports, which account for most shipments, climbed 11 per cent to a record 130.7 million tonnes.

Grain exports reached 30.3 million tonnes, including record wheat shipments of 15.9 million tonnes, while potash exports hit a record 10.5 million tonnes. Crude oil exports doubled to 24.4 million tonnes, supported by expanded pipeline capacity.

The port authority said growth in most bulk commodities offset declines in coal and canola seed exports, with canola shipments falling 23 per cent following Chinese tariffs.

“We are already seeing encouraging signs that canola seed exports through the Port of Vancouver are recovering following a trade deal signed by Canada and China in January and are optimistic early year data will show a rebound in volumes,” said Xotta.

Containerized cargo also set a record, with 3.8 million 20-foot equivalent units handled in 2025, up nine per cent from the previous year.
