Canada, Spain sign green shipping corridors agreement

Canada and Spain have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing the development of green shipping corridors and strengthening sustainable supply chains.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon signed the agreement during a visit to Europe this week. Spain joins Canada and Germany as the third country involved in the multi-port, multi-jurisdiction agreement supporting the Atlantic Green Shipping Corridor.

The initiative brings together ports, fuel producers, shippers and industry partners in Canada and Europe to advance the use of clean fuels, innovative technologies and modern port infrastructure.

The federal government says green shipping corridors are a key part of efforts to reduce marine-sector emissions while supporting clean fuel trade and creating opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.

MacKinnon also attended the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, where he promoted Canada’s aerospace industry and met with counterparts from the U.K. and Spain.

The meetings focused on shared transportation priorities, including high-speed rail, decarbonization and private-sector investment in airport infrastructure.
