MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – Pride Group Enterprises (PGE) has reserved 150 Tesla Electric Semis.

The company has made a deposit to secure the initial units, and has taken an option to increase the order to 500 trucks.

It costs $26,000 to reserve a unit, making Pride Group’s initial investment approximately $3.9 million. The trucks are available in two configurations, with either 475- or 800-kilometres range. According to Tesla’s Canadian website, the prices are $190,000 and $230,000 respectively.

Media outlet Electrk suggests this may be the largest order for Tesla Semis yet.

Pride Group Enterprises operates businesses in equipment rental, leasing, logistics and sales and plans to use the Tesla trucks across all business divisions. It says it will decide where to deploy the vehicles based on jurisdictions that are most welcoming to electric commercial vehicles.

“We believe that electrification is the way of the future as we work together across multiple industries to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Sam Johal Pride Group Enterprises CEO.

“As well, we have the option to increase our order as we gauge customer acceptance of this new technology.”

Investing in infrastructure

To support the arrival of these units and all-electric Class 8 trucks, the company is investing in infrastructure for parking, charging and full maintenance at all of its locations.

“Pride Group Enterprises’ vision is to invest in facilities that will support charging, full-service maintenance, and a consistent supply of electric trucks on North American highways,” Johal said.

“We have first-hand knowledge of the Transportation Industry across multiple verticals and we strongly believe that electric truck technology will overcome many challenges facing  traditional diesel technology such as the related maintenance and associated down-time.”

Tesla claims that the Semi provides $200,000-plus in fuel savings and a two-year payback period.

Pride Group Enterprises is privately held with 12 locations in the U.S. and Canada and more than 450 employees. It operates in the transportation, logistics, heavy-duty equipment dealerships, equipment leasing & rentals, real-estate holdings and hospitality sectors. The company and its affiliates are members of NationaLease,  one of the largest full service truck leasing organizations in North America.
