CALGARY, Alberta—CN welcomed the first trains to its new Calgary intermodal terminal today.
The railway previously operated a similar terminal in its Sarcee Yard, southeast of Calgary, but the new terminal, in the Calgary Logistics Park, has four automated in-gates and three automated out-gates. According to the company, this should keep truck turnaround times to under 45 minutes.
The terminal also offers a yard to store international containers, and specialized equipment for temperature-controlled products. While the Sarcee Yard also offered some reefer storage, the Calgary Logistics Park terminal expands on that capability.
Overall the new facility offers 30 percent more capacity than the old terminal—a total of 232,260sqm (2.5 million square feet) of warehouse distribution space—plus it is situated on enough land to accommodate an expansion. The new facility is also home to a CN Autoport facility.
The location of the Calgary Logistics Park provides CN with access to the Stoney Trail, the Trans Canada Highway and the Calgary International Airport.
“CN’s $200 million logistics park is strategically located between the ports of Prince Rupert and Vancouver and major cities across Canada and mid-America. The park’s intermodal terminal, along with very competitive ocean and rail transportation times, will provide Alberta businesses ample capacity for consumer goods and industrial materials and effective export routes for forest products, plastics and agri-products,” said CN executive vice-president and chief marketing officer Jean-Jacques Ruest.
