MILTON, Ontario: The dock doors have been put on and construction is well under way at Target’s distribution centre in Milton.
The DC is one of three being constructed for Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Target Corp ahead of its first Canadian stores opening in spring 2013.
Last year, MMDonline.com reported Target had plans to build a 120,773sqm (1.3 million sqf) DC on 68ha (169 acres) in Cornwall, Ontario.
The Milton facility, situated on 32ha (79 acres) just north of Highway 401 (approximately 50km west of Toronto), is also 120,773sqm. So is the one in Alberta, which is located on 32ha (79 acres) in Balzac, Rocky View County—roughly 20km north of Calgary.
Although no details about the configuration of the Cornwall and Calgary facilities are available, it is reported the Milton DC will have 180 docks with 65 of those dedicated to receiving.
According to Target spokesperson, Sarah Van Nevel, the DCs will be run by a third-party logistics provider. Eleven Points Logistics Inc, based in Milton, will manage the operations at all the facilities.
In January, Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Target Corp signed a deal for $1.825 billion to purchase leasehold interests for up to 220 store sites from Zellers Inc.
The company announced it will open 13 stores in British Columbia, 13 stores in Alberta, two in Saskatchewan, three in Manitoba, 32 in Ontario, 12 in Quebec, and one in Nova Scotia.
