CPKC mourns former chairman and CEO William Stinson

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) says it is mourning the death of former chairman and chief executive officer William W. “Bill” Stinson.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of William W. Stinson. Our railroaders, past and present, extend our sincere condolences to Bill’s family and friends,” CPKC president and CEO Keith Creel said in a statement. “A fourth-generation railroader and highly regarded Canadian business leader, Bill made many important contributions to our railway, the history of our company and this nation. Bill will be deeply missed.”

Stinson joined Canadian Pacific Railway at age 16, beginning a career that spanned more than four decades. He later rose to become president of CP Rail and was appointed president and CEO of Canadian Pacific Limited in May 1985.

He became chairman, president and CEO in 1988, a role he held until his retirement in 1996.

Earlier in his career, Stinson served as superintendent of CPR’s Toronto Division, where he was involved in the design and construction of the Toronto Yard, which opened in 1964.

The company said it lowered flags at its facilities across Canada in his honour.

CPKC also recently renamed a location on its MacTier Subdivision in the Greater Toronto Area as Stinson in recognition of his service.
