The federal government has officially broken ground on a new International Cargo Hub at Edmonton International Airport aimed at expanding air cargo capacity and strengthening Canada’s supply chain infrastructure.
Steven MacKinnon, federal transport minister and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, joined airport officials and project partners at the site announcement, which is being funded through the National Trade Corridors Fund.
The government said the project will increase airfield infrastructure, reduce bottlenecks limiting cargo growth and improve the movement of goods between Canadian, U.S. and international markets.
Officials said the project is expected to create about 800 construction jobs and 250 airport jobs while helping expand trade routes and cargo volumes.
“Our government is building stronger, more resilient supply chains to keep goods moving and support Canadian businesses,” MacKinnon said. “With today’s groundbreaking at the Edmonton International Airport, we are increasing trade capacity by connecting Alberta’s goods to customers across Canada and around the world. We are building a more efficient and competitive transportation network that works for all Canadians.”
Eleanor Olszewski, minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, said the project will help diversify supply chains and create new trade opportunities for Western Canadian businesses.
“The International Cargo Hub (ICH) is a generational investment in Canada’s trade and logistics future,” said Myron Keehn, president and CEO of Edmonton International Airport.
“It positions the Edmonton International Airport as a critical gateway for global commerce, strengthens supply chain resilience and creates new opportunities for our industries to grow and compete internationally.”
