CPKC marks Rail Safety Week

Canadian Pacific Kansas City is encouraging the public to make rail safety a priority during Rail Safety Week in Canada and Mexico and “See Tracks? Think Train Week” in the United States, running Sept. 21-27.

The railway said approximately 2,300 people across North America are seriously injured or killed each year because of unsafe behaviour around railway tracks and crossings. CPKC is supporting Operation Lifesaver’s annual safety campaign, which promotes awareness of the risks associated with trespassing on railway property and failing to obey crossing signals.

“Every decision near railway tracks matters,” said Dale Ruzycki, chief of police for Canada at CPKC. “CPKC reminds the public to stay alert, obey warning signs and signals, and make safety your priority near train tracks and crossings.”

The company is urging pedestrians, motorists and cyclists to cross tracks only at designated crossings, remain clear of railway property and wait for trains to fully pass before proceeding through crossings.

“Awareness saves lives near railroad tracks and crossings,” said Kelly Clough, chief of police for the U.S. at CPKC. “When people stay alert and respect warning signs and signals, they help prevent railway accidents in communities across North America.”

CPKC operates more than 20,000 miles of track across Canada, the United States and Mexico and said it will continue promoting rail safety through education and community outreach initiatives.
