Westshore re-opens Berth 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia—A coal handling terminal destroyed when a ship crashed into its supporting trestle last year has been re-opened.

Repairs are now complete at Westshore Terminals Investment Corp’s Berth 1, and the Port Metro Vancouver facility has resumed normal operations.

Westshore estimates the loss suffered due to the accident totalled $50 million with $20 million of that representing the cost of the repairs and physical property loss and $30 million being lost to due business interruption. The terminal’s operator is looking for compensation from the owner of the vessel, a 289m bulk carrier named the Cape Apricot, and from its insurance company. Westshore is also working with its own insurance carriers to recover losses, net of deductibles.

While the terminal is operational, some construction work is still ongoing as a permanent roadway is being rebuilt on the trestle. That project is expected to be completed before the end of April.
