Port of Hamilton announces latest port terminal addition

The Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) has announced a new 392,000 square-foot long-term lease agreement with McAsphalt Industries Limited at Pier 24.

McAsphalt Industries at Pier 24.

McAsphalt, which was established in 1970, is a diversified Canadian company and says it’s committed to developing, producing, distributing and marketing asphalt products, related services and technology.

The company says it was a matter of time before it had to relocate from Toronto to Hamilton. And the HPA provided a natural fit.

What the move means

“We have a lot of work ahead of us in moving the large storage tanks along with the construction of new infrastructure,” says John Carrick, president of McAsphalt.

“We hope to be open by the spring of 2012. The relocation project along with the day-to-day operation of the terminal will provide many local jobs for the community of Hamilton.”

HPA president and CEO, Bruce Wood, adds: “We are committed to growing through strategic partnerships, which increase our storage capacity, diversify our cargo mix and generate additional volumes moving across our piers.”

Wood also adds that the road construction sector continues to grow as major highways across the province are being upgraded and expanded.

McAsphalt also specializes in the transportation of liquid asphalt and black oils.

It also owns and operates a significant rail and truck fleet, and through its joint venture with the Upper Lakes Group, “McAsphalt Marine Transportation Limited,” owns two integrated tug and barge units: 11,000 Mt, OPA 90 compliant, double-hulled state of the art vessels serving the Great Lakes and Eastern Seaboard.
