A bridge in Port Colborne has been closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic after it was struck by a vessel, officials said.
The incident occurred April 16 at the Clarence Street Bridge, also known as Bridge 21. No injuries or environmental impacts have been reported.
Authorities said the bridge will remain closed until further notice following initial inspections and assessments.
“The bridge sustained impact during an incident involving a vessel, and additional time is required to complete detailed assessments and determine next steps,” officials said in an April 17 update.
They added the closure is necessary to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the bridge, noting it will significantly affect local traffic and access.
Navigation through the Welland Canal remains open, with vessel traffic continuing to move through the system.
Officials said teams are on site and working with partners as assessments continue, with more information to be released as it becomes available.
