Canada’s Transport Minister emphasizes need for strong partnerships at annual Canadian Marine Advisory Council

OTTAWA, Ont.–The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport,  addressed the Canadian Marine Advisory Council today about the recent free trade agreements, measures taken with regard to marine liability and the World Class Tanker Safety Regime.

Minister Raitt emphasized the importance of safe, secure, environmentally responsible and efficient marine transportation to Canada’s international trade and economic growth, said a Ministry release.

“Strong partnerships with the Canadian Marine Advisory Council are contributing to a safe, secure and sustainable marine industry, which in turn support trade and economic growth, create jobs and help build future prosperity,” said Raitt.

She noted recently announced trade agreements including the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement, Canada’s first with an Asian market, which will generate thousands of new jobs in Canada and provide Canadian businesses and workers with a gateway to Asia, improving their global competitiveness.

She also underlined the importance of legislation like Bill C-3, the Safeguarding Canada’s Seas and Skies Act, which aims to strengthen the safety of Canadians and better protect our coasts and oceans, and emphasized the importance of collaboration with international partners on harmonized conventions and regulations.
