Menlo Worldwide Logistics recognized for emergency management

New York City, NY–The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has commended Menlo Worldwide Logistics for its performance in planning and deploying critical health and comfort supplies supporting the OEM’s emergency response efforts during Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy.

 Since 2007, Menlo, the logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc., has partnered with the OEM to warehouse and stage relief supplies, and then mobilize a logistics plan for rapid deployment of supplies into relief shelters in all five of New York City’s boroughs in advance of severe weather events. Known as the New York City Emergency Supply Stockpile (ESS), it is the largest of its kind in the United States and a one-of-a-kind program worldwide, according to the OEM.

“Menlo Worldwide Logistics has proven time and again to be one of New York City’s most valued and flexible partners during citywide emergency events,” said Joseph F. Bruno, Commissioner, New York City Office of Emergency Management, in a letter to the company. “The outstanding partnership we formed is no doubt facilitated by Menlo’s deep commitment to proactive planning and exceptional command of logistics management. Menlo’s team made our program a continued success and a reality.”

The program has been mobilized twice, most recently in advance of last year’s Superstorm Sandy, and for 2011’s Hurricane Irene. In both cases, the events marked the only two times in New York City’s history that a general population evacuation was ordered. 

As OEM’s partner, Menlo warehouses and manages a large stockpile of relief supplies for the ESS program, and then when mobilized, executes rapid-deployment logistics and transportation management operations to stock citywide emergency shelters with relief supplies under the Logistics Shelter Support Program (LSSP). OEM and Menlo then work together post-event to plan and execute the recovery of unused supplies, rebuild and reconstitute stockpiles at the two ESS staging warehouses, and conduct post-event assessments to capture lessons learned and improve operational processes.
