Geotab adds emissions protocol to California compliance platform

Geotab has integrated the J1979-2 emissions protocol into its Clean Truck Check compliance solution after receiving certification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

The company said the update enables fleets to collect and prepare required emissions data through their existing compliance workflows, reducing the need for manual data collection and helping minimize vehicle downtime.

The J1979-2 protocol is part of California’s Clean Truck Check program, which applies to heavy-duty vehicles operating in the state, including trucks registered elsewhere. According to Geotab, the protocol provides standardized and secure access to vehicle emissions data through compliant telematics devices.

“By integrating J1979-2 into our Clean Truck Check offering, we’re delivering a future-ready compliance pathway and reinforcing our commitment to helping customers stay compliant both now and in the years ahead,” said Sabina Martin, vice-president of product at Geotab.

The company said its GO9 telematics devices can automatically identify whether an eligible truck uses J1939, J1979 or J1979-2 protocols and collect the required data through a single compliance workflow.
