Aeroports de Montreal gets ISO 14001 Certification

by Canadian Shipper

Aroports de Montral has received international ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system. The ISO 14001 registration certificate was issued 22 November 2000 by Intertek Testing Services NA Ltd. The recognition comes after three years of dedicated efforts by the entire staff of Aroports de Montral to meet the requirements of certification.

Organizations choosing to adopt an ISO 140001 compliant environment management system must institute effective, coherent practices designed to provide for the consistent enhancement of environmental performance. They must also adopt an environment policy based on three fundamental principles: compliance with applicable environmental legislation, ongoing system enhancements, and pollution prevention.

The process involves identifying all aspects of operations likely to impact the environment, establish measurable, communicable objectives and targets, define employee roles and responsibilities in the matter of environmental protection, monitor and periodically revisit all elements of the environment management system and consistently aim to minimize the impact of operations on the environment.

The environmental management of an international airport facility includes, at least, the following activities: environmental assessment of projects, noise management, monitoring of air and water quality (surface and ground water), management of residual materials, energy, wild life, environmental emergency procedures, training, as well as regulatory and technological surveillance.
