Crew member dies in fall on bulk carrier

BAIE COMEAU, Quebec—A crew member on a bulk carrier anchored in Baie Comeau has died in an apparent accident.

According to Bernard Breton, regional operations manager for the Transportation Safety Board (TSB), the man—who is identified as a Filipino national—died after a fall onto a deck of the MV Federal Yoshino. The crew member was said to be painting at the time of his fall. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was declared dead. The ship was in ballast at the time, waiting to take on cargo.

The Quebec Provincial Police were originally called out to investigate the incident. Since they found no evidence of criminality, the TSB sent out its own investigators to look into the circumstances surrounding the fatality.

The MV Federal Yoshino is registered in the Marshall Islands.
