Mexican president to talk trade with Alberta

Mexican President, Vicente Fox, will be visiting Calgary next Monday to discuss trade with Alberta’s leaders.

Details of the trip are still being finalized, however Premier Ralph Klein has confirmed he will be meeting with the Mexican leader to discuss Alberta-Mexico relations.

“The trade relationship between Mexico and Alberta has improved, but we believe there’s still room for more improvement,” says Alfonso Nieto, Mexican Embassy spokesman.

Last year, Mexico was Alberta’s fifth largest trading partner, but it will be the president’s first visit to Calgary. He will then head to Vancouver before concluding his two-city Western Canadian tour.

Last year, a delegation of Mexican legislators visited Alberta to meet with oil industry officials, politicians and energy and economic development personnel. The U.S. has urged the two oil and gas-producing regions to forge a strong relationship to help out with Washington’s oil and gas needs.
