More toll roads could be in the works

A study by Transport Canada indicates that more toll roads could be in store for major Canadian cities.

The study, obtained through the Access to Information Act, says that “Electronic toll collection systems are the most effective available measure (against traffic congestion and pollution) … and would appear to be the best choice for high-density urban areas.”

To help sell the idea, the report suggests giving tax breaks to toll-road users.

The $50,000 study was conducted in December by Ottawa, Ont.-based Research and Traffic Group.

Transport Canada refused to take a stance on the issue until 2003 at the earliest.
