Hudson Bay Railway expands role in critical minerals shipments

Arctic Gateway Group says the Hudson Bay Railway is expanding its role as a transportation corridor for Western Canada’s mining and critical minerals sector with new concentrate shipments from northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The company said Eldorado Gold Saskatchewan will soon begin shipping concentrate from its McIlvenna Bay mine in northern Saskatchewan to eastern Canada using the railway’s Flin Flon subdivision. The mine became part of Eldorado Gold following its acquisition of Foran Mining and was identified by Prime Minister Mark Carney last fall as a Project of National Importance.

“The Hudson Bay Railway is moving the materials that are helping build Canada’s future economy,” said Chris Avery, CEO of Arctic Gateway Group. “The fact that concentrate from a nation building critical minerals project, who like the Port of Churchill has been identified as a nationally significant project, is about to move on our railway speaks to the improved strength of the railway and growing role the HBR can play in supporting Western Canadian mining, industrial development and trade diversification.”

The company said the railway has undergone significant upgrades in recent years and is working toward modern North American industrial weight standards to better integrate with Canada’s Class 1 rail network.

Arctic Gateway Group also said zinc concentrate from Hudbay Minerals operations in Snow Lake, Man., is moving through the Port of Churchill for export to Europe later this summer, marking the third consecutive year the company has used the corridor.
