Tentative deal with CAW averts strike at Canadian National

The threat of a strike at Canadian National is over.

The railway has reported that it has negotiated a tentative collective agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers union, ending the threat of a CAW strike at CN’s Canadian operations that could have started today.

Details of the new three-year contract are being withheld pending ratification votes by the CAW’s 5,000 CN members. In general, the agreement provides for wage increases, benefit improvements and increased productivity.

CAW represents CN’s shopcraft forces, customer service representatives, intermodal yard employees and clerical workers.

In the current round of national labor negotiations in Canada, CN has secured ratified collective agreements with the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and the Canadian National Railways Police Association. A tentative agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is now subject to a ratification vote.
