Work to begin on bridge spanning the Saskatchewan River

Work will begin next month on a $35 million bridge spanning the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, and officials hope to complete the project well ahead of schedule.

The twin two-lane bridges, part of the province’s Anthony Henday Drive project, will be the first to provide trucks with a new option for crossing the river.

Alberta Transportation originally slated the project to be completed by the fall of 2005, but with some good luck and no unforeseen roadblocks, it could be finished much earlier.

“We’re saying we could probably finish it by the fall of 2004 and if there’s a really aggressive schedule, if everything goes perfectly, it could be completed even sooner than that,” project engineer, Bill Vandermeer, told local media.

The project is being funded by Alberta Transportation.
