July employment rises four per cent in Canada’s trucking and logistics sector

According to the report from Trucking HR Canada, employment in the trucking and logistics sector rose to 825,400 in July 2026, a four per cent increase year‑over‑year.

The report says the sector added almost 32,000 jobs compared to July 2025. On a monthly basis, employment increased 5.9 per cent from June to July.

Transport truck driver employment reached 344,100 in July 2026, up 12,500 year‑over‑year. The report also says truck driver employment rose 4.4 per cent between June and July.

According to the report, the number of active job seekers in the trucking and logistics sector fell 17.9 per cent year‑over‑year, with 7,000 fewer people looking for work. The unemployment rate dropped from 4.7 per cent in July 2025 to 3.7 per cent in July 2026. For truck drivers, unemployment fell from 4.8 per cent to 4.3 per cent over the same period.

“Employment increased while the number of people seeking work declined, leaving employers with a smaller pool of available workers,” said Craig Faucette, chief operating officer at Trucking HR Canada. “These conditions underscore the importance of workforce planning, recruitment and retention.”
