Trump bans some Canadian imports in response to counter-tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed orders banning some Canadian alcohol, dairy and other products in response to Canada’s latest counter-tariffs, the White House says.

The import bans take effect Sept. 29 and cover certain products previously subject to 50 per cent tariffs.

The White House says the measures follow new Canadian retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion in U.S. exports, including steel, dairy and agricultural equipment.

Trump also ordered changes to the products covered by U.S. tariffs imposed July 20. Some goods, including rock salt and cement, will be removed, while all-terrain vehicles and additional dairy products will be added. Those changes take effect Sept. 15.

The White House described the measures as a response to what it calls discriminatory treatment of American exports.

It says the tariffs apply even to goods that qualify under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement and are in addition to separate U.S. tariffs imposed on national security grounds.
