Eighty-three per cent of supply chain leaders say their workforce is not prepared to use artificial intelligence effectively, despite widespread plans to deploy the technology, according to a report from the Association for Supply Chain Management and the Digital Supply Chain Institute.
According to the report, only 14 per cent of organizations consider themselves fully prepared for an AI-augmented future. While 91 per cent plan to use AI to augment workers, just 7 per cent expect the technology to replace employees directly. Instead, 51 per cent expect AI to shift workers toward higher-value decision-making and 40 per cent anticipate new roles emerging.
The study found workforce readiness and return on investment are the leading barriers to adoption, each cited by 33 per cent of respondents. Organizations with AI-ready workforces reported a 71 per cent AI project success rate, compared with 28 per cent among organizations whose employees were unprepared.
“AI adoption in supply chain is more about people than it is technology,” said Abe Eshkenazi, CEO of the Association for Supply Chain Management. “The organizations making real progress treat workforce readiness as part of the technology investment, not an afterthought.”
