83 per cent of supply chain leaders say workforce not ready for AI

A new report from the Association for Supply Chain Management and the Digital Supply Chain Institute found that while supply chain organizations continue to invest in artificial intelligence, many employees remain unprepared to work with the technology.

According to the report, 83 per cent of respondents said their employees are not prepared to use AI effectively, while only 14 per cent said their organizations are fully prepared for an AI-augmented future.

The report found organizations with AI-ready workforces reported a 71 per cent AI project success rate, compared with 28 per cent among organizations considered unprepared. It also found that 70 per cent of staff were aware of AI initiatives but were not actively involved in them.

“AI adoption in supply chain is more about people than it is technology,” said Abe Eshkenazi, CEO of the Association for Supply Chain Management.

The report said 91 per cent of organizations plan to use AI to augment workers, while only 7 per cent expect it to directly replace employees. It also found 51 per cent of respondents expect AI to shift workers toward higher-value decision-making and 40 per cent expect new roles to emerge.

The study identified workforce skills and resources, unclear return on investment and data quality issues as the leading barriers to broader AI adoption in supply chain operations.
