CFIN receives $50 million to accelerate AI adoption in food sector

The federal government is investing $50 million in the Canadian Food Innovation Network (CFIN) to help food manufacturers, processors and supply chain operators adopt Canadian-developed artificial intelligence, automation and digital technologies.

According to the announcement, the funding is expected to support more than 200 small and medium-sized businesses, create about 300 jobs and support more than 450 full-time equivalent positions. CFIN also expects the initiative to help attract up to $200 million in follow-on private investment.

The investment is aimed at helping Canadian food companies improve productivity and competitiveness while addressing labour, cost and supply chain challenges through technology adoption. Funding will also support Canadian food-tech companies that develop automation, AI and digital tools for the industry.

According to the announcement, food manufacturers and processors are facing increasing pressure from rising operating costs and supply chain disruptions, making productivity improvements a key priority for the sector.

The program will support technologies ranging from AI-powered quality and food-safety systems to automation and other digital tools designed to improve operational efficiency throughout the food value chain.
