Geotab joins freight fraud prevention initiative amid rising cargo theft concerns

Geotab Inc. has joined the Freight Fraud Prevention Hub, an industry initiative led by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, aimed at strengthening freight fraud awareness, carrier verification practices and supply chain integrity education.

The company said its participation comes as cargo theft and freight fraud become increasingly sophisticated across North America, driven by digitally enabled criminal tactics that are raising operational, financial and safety risks for fleets, brokers and shippers.

The Freight Fraud Prevention Hub is designed to help prevent freight fraud by improving verification processes and promoting collaboration across the logistics sector, including carriers, brokers, shippers and technology providers.

Cargo theft continues to escalate across North America, with Geotab citing data showing losses reaching up to $35 billion annually. The company’s white paper, Securing the Supply Chain: A 2026 Blueprint for Countering Smarter Theft, found cargo theft rose 27 per cent year over year in 2024.

The report also found that 38 per cent of fleet professionals are more concerned about cargo theft than they were a year ago, while 47 per cent of North American respondents say theft-related stress and safety risks contribute to driver burnout and turnover. It also found that 58 per cent agree cargo security requires multiple layers of technology, though nearly one-quarter of the industry still relies primarily on physical deterrents.

Geotab said technology is playing an increasingly important role in reducing risk and improving visibility, pointing to tools such as real-time asset tracking, AI-powered dash cameras, geofencing and driver verification systems.

The company added its white paper highlights the need for greater industry collaboration to address evolving criminal tactics and strengthen supply chain resilience.
