The federal government is launching a new funding program aimed at strengthening Canada’s food supply chains and boosting domestic food production capacity amid global supply chain pressures and rising food costs.
Mélanie Joly, minister of industry and minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, announced the Strategic Response Fund (SRF) call for proposals, inviting Canadian organizations and industry partners to apply for funding for large-scale projects.
The fund will provide up to $350 million for eligible projects ranging from $10 million to $50 million each. It targets companies and organizations in food and beverage manufacturing, packaging, industrial systems and critical input production.
The government says the initiative is intended to help businesses expand capacity, modernize operations and build more resilient infrastructure across the country.
The SRF is part of the National Food Security Strategy, announced June 11, which aims to strengthen domestic food production, improve access to affordable, nutritious food and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.
It also seeks to enhance domestic manufacturing and supply chain systems, including investments in packaging, storage and logistics technology.
“The Strategic Response Fund offers strong support to the producers and manufacturers who work to put food on the tables of Canadians,” said Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald.
“A strong, resilient Canadian food sector is fundamental to driving competition, enabling innovation and supporting our long-term economic growth,” said Joly. “Through this Strategic Response Fund call for proposals, we will invest in Canadian businesses and organizations to strengthen supply chains, modernize infrastructure and deliver real results for Canadians.”
