Cornwall bridge replacement begins

OTTAWA: The first phase of the replacement of the North Channel Bridge Project at the Seaway International Bridge in Cornwall is set to begin in early May, the Federal Bridge Corporation Ltd (FBCL) announced.

The corporation announced the American Bridge Canada Company—the contractor selected for the first phase in the replacement—has been selected through public tender in January. The first phase includes the construction of three new bridge piers in the north channel of the St Lawrence River.

The project consists of four contracts and will extend from the Brookdale Avenue traffic circle in Cornwall to the SIBC administrative buildings on Cornwall Island. The four construction contracts are:

  • In water works
  • North Channel Bridge and structures and approach detours
  • Demolition of the existing bridge
  • Brookdale Avenue and Water Street realignment

To follow up on the project, The FBCL has launched a Internet blog site for the duration of the construction, where bridge users can register and ask questions about work plans and progress on the project. Bridge users and the community can visit and register to the new Low Level Bridge Project blog site at: http://www.pontcornwallbridge.ca/eng/ for project updates.
