The federal government is providing $1.4 million to support snow and ice control operations at airports in Norman Wells and Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories.
According to the announcement, the funding includes $810,000 for a snow blower at the Norman Wells Airport and $595,000 for a grader at the Fort Simpson Airport. The equipment will be used to clear snow and ice from runways, taxiways and aprons to help maintain safe airport operations during winter conditions.
The funding is being provided through Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program, which supports safety-related infrastructure and equipment projects at eligible airports across the country.
According to the release, reliable air transportation is critical for northern communities, supporting the movement of people, goods and essential services throughout the year. The government said the investment will help strengthen air connectivity and operational reliability in the Northwest Territories.
The announcement builds on previous federal investments of more than $8.8 million at the Norman Wells Airport and more than $3.3 million at the Fort Simpson Airport for projects including runway rehabilitation, lighting upgrades and airside equipment purchases.
“Reliable air service is a lifeline for families and businesses across the Northwest Territories, bringing in essential supplies and connecting people to the services they need,” said Rebecca Alty, minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations.
