Hyster launches dashboard to track pedestrian detection near lift trucks

Hyster has launched a pedestrian detection event dashboard that uses data from its Hyster Reaction pedestrian awareness camera system to track when pedestrians come near lift trucks in indoor and outdoor operations.

The dashboard is available free of charge to operations already using the pedestrian awareness camera and the advanced tier of the Hyster Tracker wireless verification telemetry solution.

The system tracks when pedestrians come within approximately six, 10 or 16 feet of a lift truck. The company says the information can help operations reduce the risk of pedestrian- and lift truck-related accidents by adjusting pedestrian boundaries, speaking with operators or taking other safety measures.

The camera system was developed using real-world photographic data and is designed to adapt to different lighting and environmental conditions while tracking human features. The dashboard can record the number of detection events per day and per truck, how close pedestrians get to a truck, where detection events occur relative to the vehicle, whether the truck was moving or stationary and the date and time of each event.

“Demanding materials handling applications are already characterized by harsh conditions and businesses can’t afford the added safety risk of improper operator behavior,” said Clay Hendricks, global telemetry product manager with Hyster. “This dashboard equips operations with the information they need to address safety concerns, keep crews moving and deliver the high efficiency and productivity they require day in and day out.”

The pedestrian awareness camera system can identify pedestrians at distances of up to 16 feet within a 110-degree field of view and automatically alerts lift truck operators when someone is detected nearby.

The system provides audible and visual alerts, using tones to communicate pedestrian proximity and a light to indicate the zone in which a pedestrian is detected. An optional traction alert feature can automatically slow the lift truck, encouraging operators to steer away from or slow down to avoid pedestrians.
