Studies find year‑round Churchill shipping possible

Three new studies from Fednav Limited, the University of Manitoba and the Arctic Research Foundation conclude that modern ice‑capable vessels could operate through the Churchill corridor for extended periods, including year‑round. The findings point to a significantly longer navigable season and confirm that extended‑season shipping is technically achievable.

However, several conditions must be addressed before operations begin. Required steps include environmental review, regulatory approvals, navigation simulation, infrastructure planning and consultation with Indigenous Rights Holders and northern communities across Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait.

The studies also highlight potential impacts on wildlife, sea‑ice travel and harvesting. Additional research is needed to understand effects on polar bears, belugas, seals, fish and birds, as well as community use of sea ice for travel and cultural activities.

Fednav identified the final approach through the Churchill River estuary as an area requiring further simulation and testing to determine safe operating procedures.

Next steps include engagement with communities, environmental and wildlife studies, operational planning, regulatory processes and discussions with governments, the Coast Guard, industry and marine operators.
