Cando Rail and Terminals has opened the Cando Southlands Rail Yard in Strathcona County, Alta., to support Imperial’s Strathcona refinery and other regional customers.
The terminal, now operational, will provide rail capacity for Imperial, which is constructing Canada’s largest renewable diesel facility at the refinery. The facility will use locally sourced feedstocks, such as canola oil, transported by rail.
The yard adds more than 600 operational and railcar storage spaces, connecting to both of Canada’s Class I railways and the broader North American network.
“This is a very exciting day for Cando Rail and Terminals,” said Brian Cornick, Cando’s president and CEO. “To be able to provide longstanding customers with increased rail capacity and create supply chain efficiencies is a real thrill.”
Scott Maloney, Canada fuels manager at Imperial, said the new terminal will help “debottleneck logistics operations in Western Canada” and support renewable diesel production.
Cando will handle rail operations at both the Southlands Rail Yard and the Strathcona refinery.
