The federal government has committed up to $22.4 million toward infrastructure improvements at Kelowna International Airport that will support future logistics, aerospace and industrial development.
The funding will support the YLW Economic Enabling Infrastructure Project, which includes new water, sewer, stormwater, electrical and communications infrastructure to unlock more than 165 acres of airport employment and industrial lands. The initial phase will prepare approximately 90 acres for development.
According to the government, the project is intended to remove servicing constraints that have limited development of lands surrounding the airport and create capacity for future aerospace, aviation, logistics, advanced manufacturing, technology and training facilities.
“Airports are much more than transportation hubs; they are powerful economic engines that connect people, businesses and industries to opportunity,” said Sam Samaddar, CEO of Kelowna International Airport.
The funding is being provided through the federal Build Communities Strong Fund. The government said the project is expected to support private-sector investment and employment growth in the Okanagan region.
