Canada marks opening of CANXPORT export facility in Prince Rupert

Transport Canada has announced the opening of the CANXPORT facility at the Port of Prince Rupert, a project supported by nearly $50 million from the National Trade Corridors Fund. The new site will expand Canada’s export capacity, strengthen key trade corridors and improve the movement of goods to international markets.

The investment supported upgrades to road and rail infrastructure, including three inbound and three outbound rail tracks dedicated to export transloading. The improvements are intended to increase rail capacity, strengthen connections between rail and marine shipping, and help Canadian products reach global markets more efficiently.

Located on Ridley Island, the facility is designed to handle at least 400,000 shipping containers a year, with the potential to increase capacity to 750,000. It will support exports including forestry products, agricultural goods and plastic resins.

Transport minister Steven MacKinnon said the facility will help Canadian goods reach customers more reliably.

“By creating new capacity at the Port of Prince Rupert, this facility will help Canadian products reach customers around the world more efficiently and reliably,” MacKinnon said.

The Port of Prince Rupert handled 26.3 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, a 14 per cent increase over 2024. It is North America’s closest port to Asia, Canada’s third‑busiest container port and fourth‑busiest port authority by tonnage.

The National Trade Corridors Fund has committed $4.1 billion to projects since its inception. The program supports improvements to Canada’s road, rail, air and marine routes to strengthen supply chains and foster domestic and international trade.
