Port of Churchill, Rotterdam sign…

Port of Churchill, Rotterdam sign trade partnership

The Port of Churchill and the Port of Rotterdam have signed an agreement aimed at expanding trade opportunities between Western Canada and Europe, with a focus on critical minerals, energy products and supply-chain development.

According to the announcement, the agreement will see the two ports work together to develop trade through Churchill, connect Canadian producers with European customers, identify new market opportunities and support the development of critical mineral and energy supply chains.

The partnership comes as European countries seek to diversify sources of critical minerals, raw materials and energy products. The organizations said the agreement is intended to strengthen trade links between Canada and the Netherlands while improving supply-chain resilience.

The agreement also includes plans to connect shipping, logistics and industrial partners, share expertise on port development and collaborate on attracting future investment. A critical minerals forum involving mining companies, investors, government representatives and supply-chain partners was scheduled to follow the signing.

According to the release, trade activity at Churchill is expanding. The port has handled grain exports for the first time since 2020, along with shipments of zinc concentrate, Manitoba-produced potash and northern resupply cargo destined for Nunavut communities.

The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port and serves as a major gateway for critical raw materials and energy products. The Port of Churchill, operated by Arctic Gateway Group, is positioning itself as a northern trade corridor connecting Western Canadian resources with international markets.

“With more than 3,000 businesses at the Port of Rotterdam and serving Europe’s manufacturing belts, this agreement opens thousands of new doors for us to pursue import and export opportunities and connect Western Canadian resources with one of the world’s major industrial markets,” said Chris Avery, president and CEO of Arctic Gateway Group.
