OSHAWA, Ontario— Del Monte Fresh Produce NA Inc is growing its Canadian business.
The company has purchased 12 acres in Oshawa, Ontario and plans to construct a 10,000sqm (108,000sqm) facility there. The building will house forward a distribution centre and what the company calls “one of its most sophisticated” fresh cut fruit and vegetable processing operations. It will also be home to a banana ripening centre.
When the facility opens in the fourth quarter of the year, it will be able to accommodate 16 trucks at at time—eight in and eight out. For the most part, those trucks will carry imported fruits and vegetables, since, as Del Monte explains, “many of the products we use, such as tropical fruit, do not grow in Canada”. The company added, however, that it does expect to be making use of some home-grown ingredients.
“We also expect that demand for high quality locally grown products will be increasing. To meet the demand for Ontario, Quebec or Canadian grown products we’ll be glad to support local growers whenever possible.”
Food produced at and shipped from the plant will be distributed all of Del Monte’s clients, including conventional and non-conventional retailers, super centres, military supply depots, convenience stores, and food service companies across Ontario and Quebec.
