Terracap Management and Edmonton International Airport have begun construction of a new 50,000-square-foot airside cargo facility aimed at expanding freight-handling capacity at the airport.
According to the release, the facility will be built with direct access to Apron VIII, allowing cargo to move between freighter aircraft and warehouse operations. The building will support time-sensitive shipments, including e-commerce goods, perishables, pharmaceuticals and aviation parts.
The development is part of the airport’s broader cargo expansion strategy. The federal government has committed $118 million through the National Trade Corridors Fund toward development of the airport’s International Cargo Hub and related infrastructure.
According to the release, the International Cargo Hub includes more than 2,000 acres of serviced land dedicated to cargo, logistics and trade-related development. The new warehouse is intended to support growing freight volumes and additional logistics investment at the airport.
Terracap already operates approximately 100,000 square feet of airside cargo space at the airport, leased to operators including Air Canada, Cargojet, DHL and Purolator.
The project is being positioned as an example of private-sector investment following public spending on transportation infrastructure. Airport officials said the facility will strengthen Edmonton’s position as a cargo and logistics hub while expanding available airside warehouse capacity.
“Today’s groundbreaking is a great example of what happens when public investment creates the conditions for private investment,” said Myron Keehn, president and CEO of Edmonton Airports. “This facility will add new airside cargo capacity and strengthen the ecosystem we’re building here at Edmonton International Airport.”
