The Port of Montreal and India’s Adani Group have renewed a collaboration agreement aimed at expanding trade between Canada and India and strengthening supply-chain connections between the two countries.
According to the announcement, the agreement was signed during Team Canada’s trade mission to India and builds on a partnership that began in 2018. The renewed arrangement will focus on developing trade through the Mundra-Montreal shipping corridor, identifying new business opportunities, sharing port and technology expertise and exploring collaboration in areas such as vehicle transportation.
The Montreal Port Authority said it is also strengthening its presence in India by appointing a local representative to support engagement with shipping lines, freight forwarders and importers and exporters.
According to the port, India ranked as its second-largest market in 2025, with 1 million tonnes of goods moving between the two countries. Exports accounted for 60 per cent of that volume, while imports represented 40 per cent. Key commodities included food products, ceramics and plastics imported from India, and forestry and metal products exported from Canada.
The renewed agreement comes as ports and logistics operators seek to diversify trade relationships and strengthen supply-chain resilience amid shifting global trade patterns.
“India is a major trading partner for the Port of Montreal,” said Paul Bird, president and chief executive officer of the Montreal Port Authority. “Renewing our agreement with Adani Ports, together with our new local representation, gives us the means to deepen this relationship and better support businesses as they develop new markets.”
