YYC Calgary International Airport has become the first airport in Canada to deploy Assaia’s ApronAI platform in air cargo operations, expanding the artificial intelligence system previously introduced at passenger gates.
The technology will go live Nov. 10 on one of YYC’s dedicated cargo aprons, where AI-enabled cameras will track freighter turnarounds from arrival to departure and record operational milestones including unloading, loading and fuelling activities.
According to Calgary Airports, cargo operators and ground handlers will receive real-time turnaround information designed to improve visibility into cargo operations and identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
The project received support through the federal government’s National Trade Corridors Fund. YYC recorded more than 5,200 cargo landings last year and handles more than 70 per cent of Alberta’s air cargo tonnage. The airport has invested more than $100 million in cargo infrastructure, including facilities for e-commerce, perishables, pharmaceuticals and oversized industrial equipment.
