List reveals top global ocean freight shippers

AXSMarine, a company that provides structured maritime and commodity data, released its Alphaliner Top 100 list recently, showing Mediterranean Shipping Company with a 20 per cent market share in the ocean shipping sector.

Maersk came in second with a 14.4 per cent market share, with French shipping company CMA GGM Group at 12.6 per cent.

Rounding out the Top 5 were Cosco Group with a 10.7 per cent market share and Hapag-Lloyd with 7.2 per cent.

The Alphaliner list shows there are 7,044 active ships operating globally, more than 30 million TEUs and over 360 million deadweight tonnage (DWT).

Leading the way, Mediterranean Shipping boasts 847 ships carrying more than six million TEUs. Maersk operates 713 ships with over 4.3 million TEUs.
