Canada Post to expand community mailbox conversions in 37 communities

Canada Post says it will convert an additional 485,000 addresses from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes beginning in 2027 as part of a plan to modernize operations and improve its financial position.

The Crown corporation announced it will begin discussions with local governments in 37 communities across Canada, including Calgary and Edmonton, as it prepares for the next phase of its national conversion program.

The planned conversions are in addition to approximately 136,000 addresses in 13 communities that were previously identified for transition in late 2026 or early 2027.

Canada Post said nearly three-quarters of Canadian addresses already receive mail and parcels through centralized delivery systems such as community mailboxes, apartment lobby boxes and post office boxes.

The corporation is aiming to convert the remaining four million addresses that still receive door-to-door delivery over the next five years.

The latest round of conversions will affect about 56,000 addresses in Alberta, including 17,000 in Halifax, 17,000 in Fredericton and Oromocto, 139,000 in several Quebec communities, 158,000 in Ontario municipalities, 17,000 in Manitoba and 81,000 in British Columbia communities.

Canada Post said the move will increase security by placing mail and most parcels in locked compartments while reducing delivery costs.

The announcement comes as the corporation faces ongoing financial challenges. Canada Post cited a record loss in 2025 and another significant loss in the first quarter of 2026 as reasons for accelerating its transformation efforts.

The corporation said work is already underway to identify and finalize community mailbox sites in communities scheduled for conversion beginning later this year. Residents will receive advance notice of mailbox locations and delivery changes before the transition takes place.

Canada Post said customers with functional limitations will continue to have access to accommodations through its Delivery Accommodation Program, which currently serves more than 17,000 households nationwide.
